Perry was born in Chicago to two actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. The character Jackie Harris was played by her mom in both of the two shows she starred in on Roseanne. Her parents, however, did not allow her to act until she turned an adult due to the negative effects that stress could be able to have on their daughter. Perry claims she never wanted to be an actor in high school but decided to take up playing as a way to make friends during her time at Northwestern University when she switched from Boston University. Perry had the opportunity to secure tiny TV roles on Law & Order: Criminal Intent following her graduation. However, her homesickness brought her to California to return, where she started to work in the stage. The Other Place was performed by her mother and her in 2013 on Broadway in 2013. The father of her Kevin McKidd performed in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer prize-winning film Anna Christie together with her in 2015. In the year 2016, Perry appeared on nine episodes of ABC's crime thriller The Family. Her father portrayed her in The ABC Drama Scandal. The actress also portrayed the young Mary Cooper in Young Sheldon, an CBS spin-off from The Big Bang Theory. The character was picked by auditions, even the fact that she had a deep association with it.
